UGANDA: Yoweri Museveni's daughter stuns Uganda with surprise revelation she is a lesbian

By Nigerian Watch - PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni's daughter Diana Kamuntu reveals she is a lesbian.

PHOTO: PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni's daughter Diana Kamuntu has sent shock waves across Uganda by revealing in a recent radio interview that she is a lesbian who has been homosexual since she was a little girl.

In a startling revelation, Ms Kamuntu, admitted yesterday, during a radio talk show in Mbarara, in western Uganda that she is homosexual. She added that she was revealing the fact as a protest against the anti-gay law her father signed late last month, pointing out that although she loves her father unconditionally, she will fight against the new legislation.

On Monday February 24, President Museveni signed Uganda's new and harsh anti-gay bill into law, which punishes first time offenders with 14 years in jail. It also provides life imprisonment as the maximum penalty for aggravated homosexuality defined as repeated gay sex and acts involving a minor, a disabled person or where one partner is infected with HIV.

Yesterday, Ms Kamuntu said: “I am gay and I am homosexual. I have known this since I was a little girl.

"Also, I have been Christian all of my life, so I will not tolerate any law of this supposedly democratic nation, that will place hate on any person just because of what his or her sexual orientation happens to be. Now that I finally revealed my sexual orientation, I put myself in front of this new law and I will let our people decide what to do with me.”

Shocked at the revelation, radio host, James Kasirivu found it hard to continue the interview and the live broadcast was abruptly ended after being punctuated with repeated commercials. Of late, President Museveni has been under intense pressure from international donors following his signing of the Draconian bill and this revelation by his daughter is likely to make life more uncomfortable for him.

Uganda's government has up until now shrugged off foreign aid cuts and international criticism of its tough new anti-homosexuality law, saying it could do without Western aid. President Barack Obama has said that the US will consider its relationship with Uganda following the passing of the new law, while the World Bank suspended the immediate disbursement of a $90m (£54m) loan.

Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo said: “The West can keep their aid to Uganda over homos. We shall still develop without it.

“Western aid to Africa is lucrative and profitable trade, they cannot cut off completely. Just as we did with the slave trade, slavery, colonialism, imperialism and exploitation, Africa must stand up to Western domination.”

US secretary of state John Kerry has compared the flat-out morally wrong and atrocious law to anti-Semitic legislation in Nazi Germany or apartheid South Africa. However, President Museveni warned Western regimes not to meddle in the country's affairs, saying he was not afraid of aid being cut.

Sweden’s finance minister Anders Borg, who has just visited Uganda, said the law presents an economic risk. Already, the Netherlands has frozen a €7m subsidy to Uganda’s legal system, while Denmark and Norway said they would redirect around €6m each towards private sector initiatives, aid agencies and human rights organisations.
